Psychological dissociation is defined as the failure to associate thoughts, memories, emotions, perception of the environment, and personal identity into an integrated whole (American Psychiatric Association, 2000).
While the association between psychological dissociation and NSSI has been attributed to the high rate of past traumatic life experiences in individuals who engage in NSSI (Gratz, 2003; Suyemoto, 1998), 9 the function of psychological dissociation for these individuals is unclear.
